Key EPFO update

 04 Aug 2025

Vide notification no.WSU/MemberProfilePt1/E-965649/2025-26/22 dated 30 July 2025, effective 1 August 2025, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, through Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), has introduced a mandatory procedural change for generating and activating Universal Account Numbers (UANs).

From this date onward, all new UAN allotments and activations must be completed exclusively through the government’s UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) App, leveraging Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (AFAT).

This marks a significant shift moving away from the earlier employer-led process to a biometrically verified, employee-driven system. The update is aimed at improving accuracy in identity verification, minimizing fraudulent entries, and streamlining the EPFO database by linking UANs directly with the Aadhaar ecosystem.

As a result, employers can no longer generate UANs for most employees. Instead, each individual is now responsible for initiating and completing the process through the UMANG App on their smartphone. Only in exceptional cases — such as international workers or citizens of Nepal and Bhutan — can employers continue to create UANs on their behalf.
